Newly opened in November 2025, our Community Fridge is a place to share surplus and another great way for residents to access fresh produce.

Thanks to funding from Hubbub we have joined the growing Community Fridge network which was established in 2017. There are over 700 community fridges in the country, and the number is growing. Unlike foodbanks they are open to all, there is no criteria for using a community fridge, and the main objective is to minimise food waste and share food with the community.

Our fridge is unique in that we stock it using what’s left over at the end of our packing session for our veg box scheme. We don’t really like the word surplus (and certainly don’t use the word waste!) as the produce is great quality and each spud or cabbage is lovingly grown, ‘surplus’ and ‘waste’ suggests the food isn’t good - but it’s not the food that’s bad, it’s the system! When we do the ordering for the veg boxes we often have to order quantities that mean we have a bit left at the end. We share what’s left with our volunteers and have been distributing it across the city for the past few years but we realised that we could be making sure it goes back in to the community we support: Moulsecoomb, Bevendean & Bates Estate and some surrounding areas.

Plus, because our veg box scheme supports local & organic farmers wherever possible, our community fridge benefits from that too.

The food in the Community Fridge may have come from one of the following local farms:

  • Laines Organic Farm in Cuckfield

  • Pitfield Farm in Hurstpierpoint

  • My Little Farm in Ditchling

  • Highbarn Community Farm in Brighton

  • Barcombe Organic Nurseries

  • Rock Farm in Steyning

Anyone who lives in Moulsecoomb, Bevendean, Bates Estate, Coldean or that uses the Table Tennis Club is welcome to sign up as a member, or take some food as a one-off for a donation. Just come along when we’re open and chat to the volunteer there who will explain how it works.

Where is it?

At the Brighton Table Tennis Club at 1 Moulsecoomb Way BN2 4PB.

We are really excited about our collaboration with the new Table Tennis Club in Brighton that do so much for the community. We definitely recommend coming along to find out what’s going on there as they have lots of different groups on.

When is it open?

EVERY Saturday 12.30-2.30pm

Alternate Fridays 12-1.30pm (the same day as our delivery, check out our Facebook for this info)

Alternate Mondays 5-7pm (the Monday after our delivery day)

How do I sign up as a member?

Whilst we welcome one-off donations, we are really encouraging those that can to consider making a monthly contribution (of £5 or £10) which will go towards supporting everything that we do and give you access to all the trips, events, workshops we run too, plus puts money back in the pot to support disadvantaged households in the area. So, it’s like making a charitable donation that you get loads back for (not just fresh food!). Email us at verylocalfoodhubs@gmail.com for more info, or pop down when we’re open to talk to a volunteer.
